It's been some time since I talked about Joe Odagiri. Here we go, a big news.
Joe is getting married with Yu Kashii, an actress he co-starred in "The Pavillion Salamandre". I like her a lot - though she is young, she is very good in acting and has quite a cool demeanor. Among the films available in the U.S., she is in "Linda, Linda, Linda". You can get it on Netflix.
But actually, I was more interested in his comment in the press conference. He says that he decided to announce the marriage at this time because he will be "out of the country most of the time starting from the next year."
What's that supposed to mean!!???
According to reports, he will appear in a Korean film and will go to Korea early in January. So I understand it. But he says "starting from the next year", not just "around new years".
Now, I am in this hallucination again about him playing in Scorsese's "Silence" - hmmm.... and if he will be in LA a lot, then I can have an access somehow to him...
No, no, Michi. Stop day dreaming. Get back to work.
Japan's industry people often criticize their own mobile industry as "Galapagos". The largest carrier NTT DoCoMo chose their proprietary technology for 2G, and therefore became segregated from the rest of the world and the market developed in a quite unique way, just like unique animals in Galapagos Islands.
It turned out to be an obvious bad decision, so they have tried very hard to standardize their technology in 3G cellular. Yet, in 2.5GHz wireless broadband spectrum, they have made another "Galapagotizing" decision.
Yesterday, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication (MIC) decided to give 2.5GHz licenses to two groups, one headed by KDDI, utilizing WiMax, and another by WillCom with "Advanced PHS" technology.
In the 90's, NTT tried and failed to make PHS their home-grown technology to be used worldwide. It did make it to China and some other Asian countries as the cheap fixed wireless alternative, yet it is of very limited use compared to mobile phones.
PHS mostly failed in its own market also, except for a so-so success by Willcom, with its data plan for PC card modem. So Willcom does have some expressed interest from its customers for the higher speed connection, but in the larger state of spectrum politics, it looks nothing but another try for Japan's home-grown technology again, with another risk of "Galapagotization".
Even KDDI's WiMax, whose consortium includes Intel - the largest backer of WiMax -, with the growing clouds over mobile WiMax initiative in the United States, may not be the sure bet. It is a shame to see Japan going further into the Galapagotization, just because it is too advanced and technology decision has to be made much earlier than the rest of the world.
I know that everyone wants to escape from Qualcomm's reign in CDMA monopoly world. Yes, I know it is politics. But I am still a bit concerned.
I had a hard time hanging onto my chair reading this Japanese discussion board 2channel last night...
Earlier this week a Labour MP called for the Union flag to be redesigned to include the Welsh Dragon.
Then the Japanese 2-channeler came up with this.
2-channel creative Union Jack + Wales Flag
And OMG... UK's top newspaper took it up...
Telegraph Dec. 1 Japan offers to solve "Union Jack Problem"
There are MUCH FUNNIER ONES on the original thread than the ones picked up by Telegraph.
And I am SURE that the country who invented MONTY PYSON doesn't take this up as a POLITICAL issue!! (Funny that many 2-channel participants are SERIOUSLY worried about it!)
Due to my profession, whenever a cell phone appears on a movie or drama, I cannot help but judge which brand or carrier it is. For RH3, Kenji uses a cell phone in one scene in Paris, and I believe that was this same model "RIM Blackberry Pearl"!! During this scene, my brain was working without my intention, like..."so it is almost sure Blackberry if it were in the U.S., but I did not know it is available in France... but usually a manufacturer provide those phones for 'product placement', so it should been sold over there by now..."
Yes, I am sick.
I wrote this as my comment for reiko, but I just thought that some people may enjoy it, so I put it up here.
Star Festival is callede "Tanabata" - have you heard of it? In Japanese old legend, once upon a time, there was a star girl and a star boy in the sky, both hard working young people, but they fell in love, became too eager to date all the time and stopped working. So the god in the sky got angry and made a big river between them so they cannot see each other. That is Milky Way. But they were so sad and the god felt sorry a bit, so he sends a huge swan who spreads his wing over the Milky Way to become a bridge, so they can meet once a year, on July 7. The swan is Cygnus.
So if it rains or cloudy on July 7, the lovers cannot meet. They used lunar calender in the old days, so July 7 was in mid-summer, but in solar calender, it falls during the rainy season, so I guess they have missed lots of dates since Japan adopted the solar calender!
On July 7, people decorate bamboos with colorful origami crafts, and hang cards with their wishes written on it, so the god in the sky hears their wishes, too.
I think it is the most romantic trandition in Japan.
=================================================================================================
Jason Biggs, Troy Garity, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wentworth Miller, Hiroyuki Sanada and Tom Selleck
==================================================================================================
OK, here are some more things that I want to add about "Silence".
1) Original story. Currently I have only talked about Kichijiro, the peasant who betrays Rodrigo, but there is another key role - albeit smaller role than Kichijiro -, Inoue Chikugo-no-kami, "bugyo" (a function of a local government that combines police and court in Edo period). The "BAD guy" who persecute Rodrigo.
Well, in this novel, "bad guy" is not that simple a bad guy. This is another VERY complex role. Inoue used to be a Christian himself, and he must have gone through deep thoughts about converting. There are some important discussion scenes between Inoue and Rodrigo. He is the one that invented the REAL nasty torture, but in the novel, you don't get the impression that this guy is simply a heartless bad guy.
In 2-channel discussion board, someone suggested "Teruyuki Kagawa as Kichijiro" (as I did) and "Hiroyuki Sanada as Inoue", and I remembered that role. (I read this novel some 20 years ago, so I forgot some parts of it. I had to go to Wikipedia to remember some details.) I think this role is more suitable for Sanada-san.
2) Filming schedule. Some Japanese articles about Scorsese's announcement in Cannes says that he plans to do some filming in Japan in summer 2008. So it is a really long filming schedule - I am not sure when they actually start, but reiko, you are right, Sanada-san can well acommodate this schedule, even with "Speed Racer".
I don't remember if this clip was one of the collections in Jamie's gallery, but I DO remember seeing this one before somewhere - one of my FAVORITE moments of Sanada-san. Very rare video, and I don't know how long it will be up on YouTube. If you know how to download, you SHOULD go ahead and do it.
It is his appearance in NHK talk show in 1996, when he was playing "Mitsunari Ishida" in NHK's historical drama "Hideyoshi". In my definision, 1996 is the beginning of his "big change" period that leads to his break-through performances in "A Story of Love" (1997 TV drama), "Ringu" (1998), and "King Lear" (1999-2000 RSC live stage act).
Here, NHK invited Sanada-san over for an interview for the promotion of their drama. Mitsunari Ishida was a key role in the latter half of the story, so it is taking place in mid-year, just about the time when World Cup Soccer was taking place. In the clip, he plays the piano and sings, and after this, he answers different questions. Sanada-san was saying he loves watching and playing soccer, but that part is not included in this clip.
Sisters,
Please see my today's entry about "Speed Racer" on HSN!!
<続報>
What I am saying is, it is quite interesting that Hiro will be in kids movies in a row. Jackie Chang is a bit of children's idol with his animation TV series and "Around the World in 80 Days", so maybe he was influenced by Jackie. In a way, it may be more effective to keep working on these young kids who don't have any prejudice against Asians and expect that Hollywood will change naturally in 20-30 years when these kids will become the main stream, rather than trying to break the barrier now.
And I remember reiko has been saying that he should do like Jonny Depp did, to play in kids/popular movie to make his name known widely. Maybe he is listening your advice, reiko!!
By the way, according to Japanese articles, the film is scheduled to open on May next year, and will start filming in June 2007 in Germany. So that means he will not be in "Silence" for sure???
