OK, you asked for it!!! Joe speaks English here - although I have to say, these are not his best lines. You can also see another example of his outrageous hair style!!
And by the way - Teppei is also my younger son's name.
i'm IMPRESSED. joe has an undeniable presence. (i would say, anyone who can pull off that HAIR is unquestionably stylish no matter WHAT). he's clearly at ease with himself, with his physicality. you DO have quite a keen 'eye'.
now, this film looks great. (is it?) i'm gonna see if netflix has it. but THANKS for directing me to it. i will check it out for sure. (and even with this clip, he DOES seem to be more comfortable with english than our hiro. )
and i LOVE the name teppei. (what does it mean, and BTW, what is your older son's name?)
he certainly has charisma, and it would be SO NICE to see more japanese actors (and actresses) make inroads here, in hollywood. (especially ONE)
thx again, for sharing your insights and expertise, michi san. he sorta reminds me of tadanobu asano? how would you compare them? kinda more 'angst' ridden, like asano san. (inner turmoil).
where as takeshi kaneshiro seems more quirky cool.
i don't know many other asian actors. of course, "knowing" about hiro is really JUST FINE for me. :)
reiko- First of all - your comment about his hair is REALLY TRUE!! anyway... It is interesting that you compare Joe with Tadanobu Asano. In fact, Joe's first leading role movie was "Bright Future", co-starring with Asano, and he is often compared with Asano since then. They seem to be good friends in private, and Asano is a kind of mentor for Joe. I agree, they have some similarities.
"Big River" is not distributed in the US, but "Bright Future" is. I rented it from Netflix. It is too much of an art-house movie for me - totally incomprehensive - but anyway, that is one film you can rent in the US. "Big River" also has mixed reviews - lots of people think it is a "boring movie with 2 hours with nothing happening". I liked it, particularly from the eyes of a foreigner living in the US, and its serene tempo.
Teppei's kanji character means "wise man + peace". My older son's name is Shimpei, whose character means "progress + peace".
By the way, here is a trivia from "The Last Samurai" - Do you know Ujio's first name? It was not mentioned in the film, but according to behind the scene info from Masato Harada (who played the bad guy Omura in TLS) website, it was supposed to be "Shimpei"! I don't know which kanji character were used, but it has the same name. And by the way, another trivia - Sanada-san's late father's name was Shimpei as well. hehehe. Of course, all these are coincidents!!
I don't know Takeshi Kaneshiro too much. He is not really considered a Japanese actor by Japanese fans - he is pretty much based in Taiwan, and does not speak much Japanese - so he does not appear in Japanese press so often. I have not seen his film yet, either...
this is WILD about joe and asano.....BRIGHT FUTURE is currently in my netflix queue and altho i am currently back east, when i DO get back to l.a. in a few weeks, it will be at my home waiting for me. i'm EXCITED to see the two of them in a film together!!!!!! thank you.
BIG RIVER sorta reminded me (from the clip) of 'JAPANESE STORY' (i think that was the name of it) starring toni collette and a guy named gotaro tsunashima. very quiet film, but VERY interesting study. of course, toni is such a superb actress, (imo) that she always adds depth to any movie she's in.
i'm EXCITED to see bright future. :) domo arigatou gozaimasu!!!
but now...........i must tell you.....the NAMES of YOUR SON'S and YOUR TWO "other guys"... being the same???? WOW. ..(especially that FIRST born is same as UJIO's and SECOND son is the same as your "cheating heart guy". hee hee)
i mean, that is the COOLEST trivia EVER!!!!!!!!!! i can't BELIEVE IT!!!!!!! I LOVE the MEANINGS of both those names. and they both in essence, are at the heart of our hiro sama, yes? oh, NO...these are not mere "coincidences".....(nothing ever is "just" coincidence, ne?....).....these "links" run much deeper. (i think so) beautiful and very meaningful. THANKS for sharing that. truly lovely.
(and also, hiro's FATHER'S ACTUAL NAME? wow oh wow).
well, as usual, you share a wealth of knowledge and insights. i'm excited to view this new movie (PURELY for 'study' , of course) hee hee.
and takeshi san? well, i'm ALSO not super familiar with him....(interesting to learn he is not considered japanese actor..)..i only first saw him in FLYING DAGGERS...but then rented CHUNKING EXPRESS and adored his quirkiness. but...perhaps our issy chan can share. :)
