Summer Road Trip '08

Although we typically post on Team Vox to let you know about things that are going on with Vox (to, uh, state the obvious), once in a while, we like to let you know about other cool things that are happening around the blogosphere. And we think the idea of four hilarious mommy bloggers traveling across the U.S. on their way to the BlogHer '08 conference - all the while blogging and video blogging the journey - is one trip you will not want to miss.

Four adventurous bloggers from the Silicon Valley Moms Group were selected to participate in the Summer Road Trip '08 and blog about their travels, hotel stays, media appearances, time away from their families, and life on the road. Six Apart helped them partner up with General Motors, who provided the blogging mommies with a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid SUV to help make their journey comfy, safe, and a little more green.

In case you're not familiar with them, SV Moms is a group of over 200 bloggers who showcase the ups, downs, outrages, struggles, victories, and everyday humor of motherhood. There are currently nine regional and demographically tailored sites that give mothers from D.C., New Jersey, the Deep South, Rocky Mountains, L.A., and Silicon Valley a powerful voice and sense of camaraderie across the country. Whether you're a mother, a child, or just a person who enjoys a good blog, you'll really love reading the words of these amazing women.

The moms buckled into their Chevy Tahoe Hybrid SUV on July 11th and even got an encouraging message from Katie Couric to kick things off! They are currently somewhere in the middle of America making their way to San Francisco where they'll attend an SV Moms Group Party, as well as BlogHer '08.

Not much to say except that is Naiya's latest fanvid of Ringu Saishusho (Ringu, the drama version) . Tomoya is Takayama Ryuji in this drama. I am a HUGE fan of Ringu (the movie) and have become a HUGE fan of the drama too. and it's not only because of tomobaby. It really is one great drama.

Although almost every day at Six Apart is Take Your Dog to Work Day, Friday was extra special because it was the official Take Your Dog to Work Day! Plus, as lovers of blogs and animals, we think it's great that active blogger and Human Society's President and CEO, Wayne Pacelle, thinks having dogs around the office is a good reminder of "who we're working for."

We realize some people have it ruff and aren't lucky enough to be able to bring their dog to work, but hopefully these pictures taken at Six Apart last Friday will get your tails wagging... And let me tell you, it's harder than it looks to get all the doggies and their fetching owners in one picture.

NXTcomm2日目──
今日はVerizon Communications（VZC）社のDenny Strigl氏の（社長兼最高実務責任者）の基調講演が圧巻だった。

いよいよ、来週からFiOS(←同社のFTTH、光CATV商標）サービスのInternetユーザーは下り50Mbps、上り20Mbpsサービスを利用できる。100Mbpsサービスも間近とStrigl氏は述べた。（いよいよ日本のFTTHと肩をならべるのも間近）

興味深いのは、講演後の記者会見（写真）での発言。ちょいと僕の取材メモの一部をご紹介しよう：

１）いよいよニューヨーク市街（NYC）でFiOSサービスを始める。ニューヨーク公益事業委員会は、VZCにビデオ・フランチャイズ免許（有線放送免許）を来週にも発行する。ベライゾンは本社があるNYCで待望のFiOSサービスを展開できるし、CATVとの戦いも激しくなるだろう。NYC参入には集合住宅向け配線技術の解決が大きく貢献した。

２）先日、テキサス州ダラスでFiOSサービスを開始した。ここはAT&Tのお膝元。今後、FiOSはAT&Tの営業地域に参入するかどうか注目をあびている。この件に関して、Strigl氏は「まず、VZC営業地域でFiOSを展開することが重要な課題。たとえば、VZC営業地域に隣接する地域であれば、FiOSサービスを展開することはあり得る。あくまで経済的な理由から判断してゆく」と述べ、あえてAT&Tと戦うことは意識していないこと、ましてやAT&Tの営業地域にハブ・オフィースを新たに建設すると言ったことはまったく考えていないと述べている。

３）VZCは固定電話なしの割引（携帯＋DSLあるいは携帯＋FiOS Data）を実施した。このダブル・バンドル・サービスは、ある意味でWiMAXサービスを意識した物だと言う話がStrigl氏の口から飛び出した。つまり、固定電話凋落よりも、スプリント・クリアワイヤー陣営がシカゴなどで始めているWiMAXサービスに対抗する意味合いが強いそうだ。

→そう言われると「なるほど」と納得できる。EVDO Rev.B＋固定ネットサービスでWiMAXに流れるユーザーを食い止められるか、注目したい。

４）最近VZWは中堅携帯電話のAllTelを買収して、携帯業界トップ（加入者数で）に返り咲いた。まだ他の携帯会社を買収する気があるか？との問いに「あえて、積極的におこなうとも、おこなわないとも言えない」とコメント。

→個人的ニュアンスとしては、良い買い物があれば、まだまだ買いそうだという印象を受けた。

５）経済停滞と同社の業績については、「経済停滞よりもCATVとの競争の方が、経営にとっては大きなインパクトがある。経済停滞の影響はそれほど大きくない」とのコメント。

６）携帯ネットワークのオープン化については、積極的な姿勢をコメントし、Googleの携帯OS“Android”以外のオープンOSにも積極的に対応する考えを示している。（←実際、VZCは最近LiMo Foundationのボードメンバーになっている）また、AmazonのKindle（電子ブック）に代表される「MVNO ディバイス」についても「経済的に見合うなら、積極的に取り扱う」と述べている。（←Kindleはアマゾンから本をダウンロードするのにSprint Nextel社の携帯データ・サービスを利用している）

VZC社は、あんまり迷わず経営戦略を遂行している様子が、今回の基調講演では印象深い。

今日からNXTcomm（ネクストコム）ショーがラスベガスで始まった。

電話業界を代表するショーだが、年々縮小している。今年も、参加者、出展者ともに減った。

とはいえ、米国通信業界の状況を知るには、重要な展示会だ。

IPTV、IMS、SDP（サービス・デリバリー・プラットフォーム）、メトロイーサ、PBTなど様々なキーワードが今年も飛び交っている。

興味深いのは、日本勢の復活だ。米国勢が展示を縮小あるいは、撤退する中、NECさん、富士通さん、日立さんが比較的大きな展示をおこなっている。特に富士通さんは、入り口にドーンと構えてアルカテル・ルーセントと張り合っている。

一時、米国市場で存在感が薄れていた日本勢だが、昨年あたりからやや復活の兆し。特に富士通さんはPBTで健闘している。

あと、初日の会議で目立ったのは、米国の通信規格団体ATISのパネルだ。

AT&T、Verizon Communications、Qwestの技術トップが顔をそろえて、様々なトピックについてコメントを繰り広げたが、気になったのはオープン・ネットワークについての見解。

VerizonのMark Wegleitner氏（SVP、Technology and Networks Planning、写真右から2番目）が、「オープン・ネットワークはIMS（IP Mulitimedia Subsystem→米国のNGN）に欠かせない。オープンな世界に対するゲートウェーがIMSとなる」と積極的な指針を示した。

それに対し、AT&TのChris Rice氏（EVP、Shared Services、写真左から2番目）は「ニューアプリケーションの開発は、オープン・ネットワークでなくてもできる。IMSは目的ではなく、手段だということを忘れてはいけない」と述べ、AT&Tがオープン・ネットワークを静観している姿勢を強調したこと。

初日から電話業界のトップ２が、刃を交えるのは珍しい。

さて、今年の会議はどんな話が飛び出すやら。

米通信業界2位のベライゾン（Verizon Communications、VZC）社が、来週、固定電話なしの割引プランを発表するそうだ。

AP通信が米東部時間13日に伝えた。

米国では、固定電話、テレビ、インターネットを組み合わせたトリプル・プレー戦争が続いてきた。その一方で、従来のアナログ固定電話をやめて、携帯だけにする世帯が増えてきた。こうした現実を受け入れ、Flex Double Playと言う割引プランをVZC社は出す。これは携帯電話とDSLあるいはFiOS TV（VZC社の光CATVサービス）を組み合わせた割引で、固定電話ははいっていない。

このパッケージは、現実を受け入れると言う意味合いもあるだろうが「固定電話は、そろそろ引退させよう」との意図も感じられる。電話会社にとって「高いメンテナンス費用が掛かる固定電話よりも、より平均利用額が多い携帯電話に誘導した方が、相対的にはコストダウンになる」というターニング・ポイントが近づいてきたのかも知れない。（←まだ数年先と思うが）

さて、こうなると固定電話、携帯電話、インターネットとそれぞれ別会社にしているNTTのような事業者は、難しい立場に立たされることになる。

いずれにせよ、VerizonのFlex Double Playは、ちょっと気になる割引プランだ。
